SUMMARY:2 Day Hands-On Mastertrack: Moderate Third Molar Impactions for the General Dentist
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Dr. Koerner\nDr. Koerner has presented hundreds of didactic and participation oral surgery courses to general dentists in the U.S. and abroad. He has been an Associate Professor in Oral Surgery and is now an Adjunct Professor at Roseman College of Dental Medicine in Utah. Dr. Koerner is the author of 30 articles on various aspects of oral surgery for the general dentist and has authored or co-authored four books on oral surgery. In addition\, he has made several surgery DVDs with Dr. Gordon Christensen. He is past president of the Utah Dental Association and Utah Academy of General Dentistry. Though not an oral surgeon\, Dr. Koerner received surgery training in the U.S. Army and in his Utah general practice performed only oral surgery for over 20 years. He was given the National AGD’s Weclew Award for contributions to general dentistry and dental education\, the Utah Dental Association’s Distinguished Service Award\, and the University of Washington School of Dentistry’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Koerner speaks Mandarin Chinese and has conducted many trips to different parts of China for exchanges with Chinese dentists and partners with Chinese colleagues to provide humanitarian treatment for children. Dr. Koerner is the Director of The Koerner Center for Surgical Instruction\, an international organization providing oral surgery training for general dentists (www.koernercenter.com). \nCourse Objectives:\nMore easily remove moderate third molar impactions (single or multiple) predictably and according to accepted standards of care. \nPrevent and/or manage complications that can occur during or after oral surgery. \nEvaluate and select third-molar impaction patients that are within the capability of the practitioner performing the case. Otherwise\, refer to another clinician.

SUMMARY:Neonatal and Infant Tongue Tie Release: Diagnosis and Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Dr. Robert Convissar\nDr. Robert Convissar is a pioneer in the field of laser dentistry. One of the first dentists in the world to incorporate lasers into general practice he has over 32 years of experience with CO2\, Diode\, Erbium\, and Nd.YAG wavelengths. He has authored over fifteen peer-reviewed papers and 7 laser textbooks. An international lecturer from New York to London to Sydney to Tokyo to Dubai\, and everywhere in between\, he has delivered close to 400 Laser Certification and Laser Tongue Tie Certification courses worldwide. He practices laser-assisted dentistry in New York City. \nCourse Objectives\nThis course includes a certified lactation consultant\, a critically important part of the tongue tie release team. In this combination lecture and hands-on course\, attendees will be introduced to the concept of laser frenectomies\, an increasingly popular method by which dentists and physicians can treat tongue and lip ties in their patients. 5% or more of the babies born in the United States have such tight tongue-ties and frenum pulls that they cannot successfully latch onto their mother’s nipple and breastfeed. For the baby\, serious consequences include loss of weight and the label of “failure to thrive”. For the mother\, this results in sore and cracked nipples\, mastitis\, painful engorgement and post-partum depression due to an inability to nurse her baby. This has classically been treated by a physician taking a scalpel or a pair of scissors to the newborn’s mouth and cutting the attachment. The treatment of choice\, however\, is for a dentist to use laser technology to painlessly\, bloodlessly remove the attachment\, allowing the infant to immediately nurse. Though many practitioners perform tongue-tie release\, few are trained in the PEEL Technique ®. This technique ensures that the 4 movements the tongue must make to nurse successfully can be performed: \n\nAccumulate all of the required data via history intake forms\nPerform a clinical examination to arrive at the correct diagnosis\nEvaluate when this procedure should be done\nPerform the procedure using laser technology\nNetwork with lactation consultants\, pediatricians\, neonatologists\, and the rest of the medical team\nGrow your practice of neonatal dentistry
